2020 has been a difficult year for us all. The ongoing pandemic has hampered our progress in society, our businesses and our very livelihoods. We are all handling it in our ways, and adapting where we can. Our very lives are changing daily, and it should be captured to mark this historic event that will change the world, and how we as a generation will adapt to it from here out.

From clapping for our carers every Thursday at 8 pm to memorable virtual celebrations, everyone has a moment worth recording in 2020.

We are creating a unique virtual photography exhibition capture Europe during the pandemic by inviting the public to submit a photo, taken between 01/01/2020 and 15/01/2021, focussed on three themes –hold together and help each other, my new normal life and our home during the pandemic. This will highlight and exhibit how people have viewed the pandemic, and their experiences and stories living within it, by expressing and exploring both shared and individual experiences through their lens.

The aim of the event is not only to create social awareness around the pandemic, and display every individuals’ lives and emotions through the photography submissions, but also to capture these exceptional and unprecedented moments through a broad range of stories.

Summary

This exhibition has 6 eligible submission regions, including France, UK, Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain. The shortlisted photographs will be published to the official website and its Instagram account, in the order of submission.

The entrants who live outside the above countries can select the nearest eligible submission region to your country of residence.

Each region will select the 20 best photographs for the next round judging process. The shortlist for the next round will be confirmed by 15/01/2021.

All entries are judged by a distinguished international panel. The jury will judge the entries in several rounds from 17 January 2021 to 05 February 2021. There will be a separate award “public’s choice”, giving to the photograph which gets the most votes.

All winners have the opportunity of being a contributing photographer for Nouvelles d’Europe. All finalists can receive the certificate.

Exhibition schedule

  1. Submission:

    We will publish outstanding photographs on our channels, including Nouvelles d’Europe Newspaper and website, UKZone WeChat account, Chinaminutes.com and other channels to exhibit the artwork and open to public voting.

  2. Online Exhibition:

    The 2020 life in the pandemic era photography exhibition will be held online on its official website and Instagram account. The work which is the most relevant to the theme from the submissions will be exhibited online (high-quality original images are required) from 17 January 2021 for a three months period.

Categories

  • Hold together and help each other: capture the moving moment during the lockdown, no matter if it is the key workers remain on their positions to help others or how people are helping each other. Show the coronavirus kindness through your lens.
  • A new normal life: living in times of the pandemic is "the new normal". Capture how the pandemic has impacted and changed your everyday life. i.e. keeping the social distance at all time has become a normal thing to do, wearing masks on public transport are required.
  • Our home during the pandemic: From empty streets during the lockdown to returning to a new normal, then back to a second lockdown, all of these moments have made 2020 special and unforgettable - to be captured through your lens.

Entry rules

  1. Only one entry per person.
  2. This Submission is open to residents of Europe,the UK,Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland aged 18 years or above.
  3. The entry is only valid by submitting the photographs on exhibition.chinaminutes.com Submission by email or on paper will not be accepted.
  4. The entry must be relevant to the chosen category with a positive content. The images must be taken in Europe and/or the UK between 01/01/2020 and 15/01/2021.
  5. Each entrant can only submit up to 3 images and each image file must be submitted in JPG format (no more than 5MB) and can be in either color or black and white.
  6. The organization reserves the right to ask for additional information i.e. the image files in TIF/RAW format. If the TIF/RAW format can not be provided, the errant may disqualified from the submission.
  7. Entrants should include their own name, address, telephone number, category, shooting location, shooting equipment, image title and description (no more than 300 words)
  8. The content of the submitted image must not be altered. Must maintain the integrity of the picture by ensuring there are no material changes to content. Only retouching which conforms to currently accepted standards in the industry is allowed. The jury is the ultimate arbiter of these standards and may at its discretion request the original, unretouched original file.

Prizes

One prize will be awarded in each category, including £500 camera voucher and the opportunity of being a contributing photographer for Nouvelles d’Europe.

Judging Process & Criteria

The entrants need to submit the application via exhibition.chinaminutes.com by selecting the submission region(France, UK, Germany, central and eastern Europe, Italy and Spain. Entrants should include all required personal information and confirm the terms and conditions as well as filling out the GDPR-compliant photo consent form.

The judging process for the 2020 life in the pandemic era photo exhibition will take place online. All submitted photographs will be first selected and reviewed by the organizer - Nouvelles d’Europe.

The shortlisted photographs will be published to the official website and its Instagram account, in the order of submission. The published photographs are then eligible for public voting.

Category awards

All entries are judged by a distinguished international panel. The jury will judge the entries in several rounds from 17 January 2021 to 05 February 2021. The judges will select 1 winner from each category based on the quality and technique of the work and the interpretation of the theme. 3 key judging criteria are:

  1. Adherence/appropriateness to the theme and the chosen category:the photography needs to show the understanding of the theme while showing creativity and a fresh point of view.
  2. Visual appeal: composition, color balance, lighting, exposure, focus and level of details.
  3. Story telling:refers to the photograph’s ability to communicate the theme and message to the viewer and evoke imagination.

Public's choice award

There will be a separate award “public’s choice”, giving to the photograph which gets the most votes. We invite the general public to vote for their favourite image by liking certain photographs on the official website and its Instagram account.
